Drill and Blast Intern (from May 2019 to August 2019)
During the summer between the 1st and 2nd year I undertook a 88 day long placement in Thailand where I worked at 15 different quarrying operations across the country. I took part in the following activities: 1. Drill and Blast I helped design a number of staggered blast patterns for the shot firing department by calculating the burden and spacing, as well as spray painting drill markers and stemming up holes ready for blasting. I observed the senior engineers using an MDL Quarryman Pro laser scanner, to scan the bench faces and input the data into MDL's Face 3D Pro software to determine the optimum angle to drill the blast holes. I ensured that each electric detonator and extension cable circuits were complete and safe by measuring the circuits resistance using an ohmmeter. 2. Geotechnics I created a Geotechnical report for the company which outlined the health and safety, economic and environmental benefits which can be achieved by carrying out adequate core logging for open pit operations. The report also explained the Slope Mass Rating analysis technique, which can be used to determine whether a slope requires supports and what type of supports are needed. Additionally, the report explained the importance of carrying out Limit Equilibrium and Numerical Modelling analysis methods during the mine planning phase of operations, to ensure that the factors of safety of the pit slopes are compliant with any legislative requirements. 3. Health and Safety I completed Uawithya's health and safety "Take 5" personal risk assessments while on site, to ensure that I was working safely. I helped analyse the drillers' log to determine which blast holes required lining in order to avoid infilling any cavities with ANFO, or mixing ANFO with water that was present within the blast holes to limit the amount of toxic nitrogen dioxide fumes produced when blasting.
