What to expect from the role?
  • To participate in learning, development, supervision and practice which supports successful completion of a board approved internship in Psychology.
  • To be involved in the development and the provision of psychology services to people experiencing common mental health issues referred by GPs, Community Services and self-referrals.
  • To support GP’s and other services in their work with patients with primary mental health difficulties.
  • To participate in other activities relevant to the above criteria, for example, education, group work, and liaison.
  • To participate or lead the development of innovative practices in the delivery of psychology services.
Psychologists/Provisional Psychologists will be expected to apply psychological knowledge and theory derived from research to the area of mental health, to assist young people, adults and their families with substance misuse, emotional, mental, or behavioural problems by using psychological assessment, formulation and diagnosis based on biological, social and psychological factors, and applying therapeutic interventions using a scientist-practitioner approach. Such practice is undertaken within an individual’s area and level of expertise and with due regard to ethical, legal, and professional standards.

Essential criteria
Completion of a Psychology Board of Australia approved program of study in Psychology, with provisional registration with AHPRA (or eligibility to acquire).

Placements may be undertaken on a 2-4 day basis depending on the specific requirements of the practice and candidate needs. As a general rule internships run for a 1 to 2 year basis with students attending at least two days per week during that time.
